The Chimney Sweeper Summary in English:-
Summary : The Chimney Sweeper is a pen-potrait composed by William Blake. It is a simple poem about childhood and child labour. From a poor, raggedly dressed child's mouth the poem tells of a dream of release from the untidy and sordid life of chimney-sweeping. There are thousands of sweepers like Tom, the child, who are suffering like him because they have been unwillingly engaged in their job of chimney sweeper. The children are required to work hard and face troubles. Their heads are clean-shaved so that the soot of mildly burning pockets of fire from the furnaces may not burn them. They have to live and sleep under inhuman conditions. In his dream the child saw an Angel. He gets the children free from their dirty and dangerous work. Children are now happy being relieved of their burdensome work.

सारांश-William Blake द्वारा रचित The Chimney Sweeper बाल श्रमिकों का सजीव चित्रण है। यह बचपन और बाल-श्रम पर आधारित ■ एक सरल कविता है।
एक गरीब, अपरिच्छन्न बच्चा, मलिन और दुखद चिमनी साफ करने वाले जीवन से मुक्ति के स्वप्न के बारे में कह रहा है। टॉम जैसे सैकड़ी 5 बच्चे उसकी भाँति पीड़ित है। बच्चों को मुसीबतों का सामना करते हुए कठिन परिश्रम करना होता है। उनके बाल मुड़ा दिये जाते हैं ताकि चिमनी से निकलने न वाली काली धुओं के साथ निकली चिनगारियाँ उन्हें जला न दें। अमानवीय परिस्थितियों में उन्हें सोना और जीवन व्यतीत करना होता है।
स्वप्न में वह बच्चा एक देवदूत को देखता है। वे बच्चों को खतरनाक काम और गंदगी से मुक्त कर देते है। अपने बोझिल कामों से मुक्त हुए बच्चे अब खुश हैं।

Q. 1. In your locality you might have come across several children working in different fields of life. Do you think it is proper to be engaged in work when one should be studying in school ?
Ans. It is improper for the children at the school-going age be engaged in work. But there may be certain requirements which compel them to do so. The main problem is that of livelihood or basic necessities of life-food, clothes and shelter. Their parents or guardian cannot afford the exhorbitant expenses of their studies.
Q. 2. Why do these children work? Is there any compulsion to work or is it sheer ignorance on the part of their parents?
Ans. These children have to work because of their extreme poverty. They are forced to work for maintaining themselves. They have to earn to live. Some parents are also responsible for child labour. They become selfish. To fulfil their selfish motive they compel their children to work.
Q. 3. Make a list of the kind of work children are usually engaged in. Also, discuss the treatment meted out to them at their work place.
Ans. The kinds of works in which children are engaged varies from place to place. But generally they are engaged :
2. as pages in restaurants and hotels
3. as porters
4. for washing cars
5. for various works at different stores or shops
6. In remote villages they have to work as agricultural labour.
7. as cowherds or shepherds.
The government will have to eleminate this vicious problem of child labour. It is beyond the power of any individual. The social outlook and system must be changed. To stop this practice people should come forward and help the government. They should have a missionary zeal too.

Ans. In the first line of the poem 'I' is 'Tom' who was sold by his father after his mother's death due to poverty.

Ans. William Blake composed the poem, 'The Chimney Sweeper'. He gives a pen-potrait of a little boy named Tom who dreams that there are several children chimney-sweepers like Dick, Joe, Ned and Jack. They are also suffering like him because they have been unwillingly engaged in their job of chimney- sweeping. All of them are busy in their work. All of them are facing troubles while working near the chimney that carries off smoke or stream of fire from furnace, engine, etc. Their work is full of danger. Any time they may die. All of a sudden, an Angel comes to them. He gets them free from their untidy and troublesome work. Ans. Tom works as a chimney-sweeper and sweeps the black substances rising from fire flames in the smoke, sticking to sides of it. He is spending a very helpless and sordid time there. Several other children are also unwillingly working there as chimney-sweepers. One night an Angel appears in his dream and sets all children workers free of their sufferings. Their pains and agonies are over now. They are free to move anywhere they like.
It is important that a dream of release from drudgery and dirt of chimney-sweeping, emboldens the unfortunate children to continue their job willingly and happily.
Q. 3. What picture of the 18th century England does the poem create ?
Ans. The poem presents the picture of the 18th century industrial England. It throws light upon the wretched condition of the children employed against their will, as chimney-sweepers by factories and industries. The children were required to work hard for long hours. Their heads were clean-shaven so that the soots of mouldering pockets of fire from the furnaces or engines may not burn them. They had to work and sleep under inhuman conditions.

Ans. The Chimney Sweeper' is composed by William Blake. The poem touches the tender feelings of the readers. It shows how life challenges, corrupts and destroys the innocence. It depicts the cruel impressions of child-labour and shows sympathy to their miserable condition and victimization. It throws light on how inhumanly they were being treated in the eighteenth century. A child had to work as a chimney-sweeper and sleep close to the furnace of the chimney under inhuman conditions.
Q. 6. Explain the paradox in line 23.
Ans. A paradox is a statement which is apparently self- contradictory or absurd, but it has a valid and more significant meaning. Tom, who was unhappy to work as a chimney-sweeper and led a life of drudgery and dirt, like many other children, working in a factory, became happy in such an unpleasant and adverse condition. This is a paradox.
Tom was living in a wretched condition. He had to work hard. He had to live and sleep under inhuman conditions in the soot of smouldering pockets of fire from the furnaces.
But in line 23 the poet observes, "Tho' the morning was cold, Tom was happy and warm." It is a paradox. So, here it seems contradiction. We find that during the previous night Tom had a dream. An Angel had come and freed all the children chimney-sweepers from factory. They got rid of their wretched life for ever. The dream made him feel so. That is why, he was happy though the morning was cold.
