➤ An Epitaph Summary in English :- 

'An Epitaph' is a beautiful short poem composed by Walter de La Mare. It is heart touchable poem. In this love poem, the poet tells us about the most beautiful lady of a western country who is no move in this world. The poet's death with the transitoriness of human life and human relationships.

The poet expressed his bad feeling toward beautiful lady who has died. She was light of step and heart. Her beauty was very attractive, but it is short-lived.

There is no way to save beauty from destruction. After her death, her beauty vanishes and passes. The poet loved her so much that when she was dead, he was weeping bitterly. He used to sit on her epitaph, where she was laid down. The poet feels that nobody will remember them after his death. The poet wants to say that if a lover loves someone too much by heart can never leave her alone.

At last, the poet says that beauty vanishes but the moral works always are remembered.

कवि ने उस खूबसूरत महिला के प्रति अपनी बुरी भावना व्यक्त की जिसकी मृत्यु हो चुकी है। वह कदम और दिल की प्रकाश थी. उनकी सुंदरता बेहद आकर्षक थी, लेकिन यह अल्पकालिक होती है। 

सौन्दर्य को नष्ट होने से बचाने का कोई उपाय नहीं है। उसकी मृत्यु के बाद, उसकी सुंदरता गायब हो जाती है और ख़त्म हो जाती है। कवि उससे इतना प्यार करता था कि जब वह मरी तो वह फूट-फूट कर रो रहा था। वह उसके समाधि-लेख पर बैठता था, जहाँ उसे लिटा दिया जाता था। कवि को लगता है कि उनकी मृत्यु के बाद उन्हें कोई याद नहीं करेगा। कवि कहना चाहता है कि अगर कोई प्रेमी किसी से बहुत ज्यादा दिल से प्यार करता है तो वह उसे कभी अकेला नहीं छोड़ सकता।

अंत में कवि कहता है कि सुंदरता तो लुप्त हो जाती है लेकिन नैतिक कार्य सदैव याद रहते हैं।
