Village Song Summary in English :-

Summary- In her Village Song Sarojini Naidu, the 'Nightingale of India' presents the charms of Nature as well as a girl's anxiety. The poem is an avowal of the poet's firm faith in God. The poetess expresses her innermost fear and prays to God to guide her through darkness.

Here Sarojini Naidu has depicted a live picture of Nature. A village girl went to fetch water from the Jamuna. She was carrying a pitcher full of water. She was on her way back to her house. She was alone. She had no companion with her. The way was long and solitary. She was attracted by the boatman's song. She was engrossed in the melody. Shadow of night engulfed her way throughout. There were several hurdles she had to face on her way back. The hooting owls, serpents and evil spirits could cause her death. She became conscious of her home. She thought her brother and mother would be worried because she had not returned to her house. She was too late. She was threatened. She

could also face sudden storm and lightning in the way. So she prayed to God to offer strength in facing all these troubles bravely.

The poem reveals the reality and apprehensions of human life. Human beings have come on the earth to perform their responsibilities facing many odds in the journey of life.

C.1. LONG ANSWER QUESTIONS:

Q. 1. How has the poet picturised the fall of night? Give details.

Ans. The poet Sarojini Naidu has picturised the fall of night. with a realistic approach to the situation. It shows her deep study of nature. Her feeling is also reflected in the poem. The fall of night is followed by the dark shadows, swifty and smoothly passing through. A white crane is crying out in the darkness. The shrill of owl is heard which is not pleasing to the ear. The gentle moon is not throwing its beams. The serpent may bite her in the darkness. The evil spirit may cut her body into pieces. The scene is, of course, horrible. The poet has painted a lively picture.

Q. 2. What does the expression 'Ram Re Ram' suggest?

Ans. In the poem 'Village Song' the speaker has been returning back to her house, carrying a pitcher full of water. She has been attracted towards the boatman's song. Her passions for the same has delayed her return to her house. Meanwhile with the fall of night, the call of crane and the shrill of an owl is heard. There is also the apprehension of snake. An evil spirit may cut her into pieces. So all these things have created a feeling of death in her mind. In these circumstances she utters 'Ram Re Ram' remembering God to help her at such a crucial time.

Again she thinks that her brother would be mentally upset and worry for her and her mother would be weeping and praying to gods for her safe return. She further thinks that the Jamuna's water is flowing fast. The storm and the lightning might engulf her, causing her death. She prays to God to extend such help to her, so that her foot-steps get stronger. She also prays to god to guide her at the time of her distress. She again uses, the words 'Ram Re Ram'.

It appears that she has used Ram Re Ram' to console (solace) herself.

Q. 3. The poetess has used a number of homely images in the poem. Make a list of these images. What do these images really suggest about life ?

Ans. The poetess has used a number of homely images. These have been placed in the verse very nicely. The details of the same is given below :

(i) boatman's song,
(ii) shadows of night are falling,
(iii) white crane calling,
(iv) wild owl's cry,
(v) tender moon-beams,
(vi) in the darkness a serpant should bite, (vii) an evil spirit should smite.

Q. 4. Compare this poem with Robert Frost's poem 'Stopping by Woods ..... What do these poems tell about human life and how?

Ans. There are many similarities in both the poems. Robert Frost has also given the description of Nature in his poem. Sarojini Naidu in her poem has presented a live picture of Nature. A girl, carrying a pitcher full of water, is on her way back to her house. The way is long and lonely. She is attracted by the boatman's song. Shadow of night has begun to emerge throughout. There are several obstacles she has to face on her way back. The owls, snakes and evil spirits may cause her death. Her brother and mother would be worried because she has not returned to her house. She may face storm and lightning in the way. So she prays to God to offer her strength in facing all these troubles.

The poem reveals the reality of human life. We have come here to perform our duties facing many obstacles in the way.

Robert Frost has also dealt with this reality of life, with the help of Nature. In his poem also a village is mentioned. Also mentioned are woods, farmhouse, frozen lake and the darkest evening. But there is some basic difference. While 'Village Song' describes the realities of life, Robert Frost in his poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" indicates the importance of responsibilities in life. To Frost leading a glorious life is not the real aim. Life is full of responsibilities and duties.

Q. 5. How does your thought proceed when you perceive a danger?

Ans. We experience certain sorts of dangers. They may natural, physical or spiritual. We become perplexed to face it even by its apprehension. Seeing a snake we become horrified. be The storm, the lightning and such sorts of other natural calamities make us frightened and sometimes cause death too. To get f it averted we either face it boldly or pray to God. The poetess gives emphasis on the prayer to God as she has firm belief in Him.

Q. 6. Based on your experience give a description of the storm.

Ans. Nature is kind to us, by helping us in solving our problems and in enjoying the pleasures of life. But sometimes it becomes unkind. Storm is such a brutal creation of nature. It causes vast devastation of human life and property. It creates horrible scenes throughout its movement. Heavy casualities of birds, beasts, flowers and human beings take place due to storm. Building structures, trees and standing crops are badly damaged.

I have experienced it several times in my life. They were horrible. I pray to God to save us from such destruction.
