➤ Snake Summary in English
D.H.Lawrence, besides being a novelist, and short story writer, is also known as a prolific poet. Capturing his emotions through free verse, his poems mostly deal with the effects of modernity and industrialization on man. The poem opens with an encounter of the poet with the snake on a hot summer day when the snake had come out of the hole to quench its thirst. The poet too had gone for the same, but seeing the snake, he waits for his turn. He keenly watches the snake and describes it beautifully as the snake moves forward on its belly to sip the water. The snake looks at the poet vaguely and returns back to the water to quench his thirst. The poet, because of what his education had taught him, thinks it to be poisonous and decides to kill the snake. His instinct urges him not to do so, as he somewhat liked the yellow-black snake. The snake quietly moves back to the hole, leaving the poet wondering if he did the right thing by letting the snake go or if was he a coward, afraid of getting anywhere near the snake. So, he ultimately picks up a log and throws it at the snake. The snake vanishes rapidly, leaving the poet standing and staring at the fascinating creature. The poet regrets his action and hated himself for such a mean act. Ultimately, the poet gives enough respect to the snake, treating him as a king in exile.
