C. 1. LONG ANSWER QUESTIONS :

Q. 1. The neighbours who assembled to hear of cobra talk about several things. Make a list of the issues they touch upon. What does the conversation suggest about the people's reaction when danger strikes ?

Ans. The neighbours assembled at the gate of the bunglow on hearing the news of the cobra that had entered the garden. They began to talk about different problems. Some of them charged the old servant, Dasa for his negligence and laziness. They were holding him responsible for this incident. The following list includes issues on which the neighbours and the inmates were talking about:

(i) They hold the servant, Dasa, responsible for the negligence in keeping the garden neat and clean.

(ii) When the servant told them that he had been asking for a grass-cutter since long, they began to discuss about the price of the grass-cutter. A few of them informed that the price of the -grass-cutter was very high at the time of War due to the high price of iron-commodities.

(iii) They also discussed and made forceful speech on black marketing due to war.

(iv) The college boy of the inmates presented a horrible description of snake-bite death. He presented a data of snake- biting death every year. He announced that the casualties due to snake bite were 30,000 every year.

(v) They also discussed the gravity of the big cobra.

(vi) An old beggar woman told them not to kill the cobra as it is God Subramanya, who had come to visit the bunglow- holders.

(vii) A fake snake-charmer came there and assured them that he could catch the snake, but he showed his helplessness at the spot.

(viii) Dasa informed wrongly that he had caught the snake and mother placed some milk in the water-pot in which he had claimed to keep the snake.

During all these conversations all the persons who were present there looked frightened of the cobra.

Q. 2. How do you react when your parents chide you for neglecting your duties ?
Ans. If my parents chide me for neglecting my duties, first of all, I assess their charge. If I find their charge baseless, I defend myself by telling the truth. I say to them to trust on their son. I make a promise to maintain their trust. If I find myself at fault I confess my negligence and try to correct my fault. I never try to defend my negligence because this minor negligence may inspire me for bigger crime. Such minor crimes must be checked in the beginning. Parents always chide their offspring for their betterment. They never want their son to spoil himself. So their anger is a boon for the children. Considering all these points I try to give up my bad habits.

Q. 3. Read carefully the following utterances of Dasa : "There is no cobra.'
"Where is the snake ?'

'I have caught him in this.'

'Don't call me an idler hereafter.'

What do these utterances tell about Dasa's character ?

Ans. The utterances made by Dasa throws light on his character. All these utterances show that Dasa was a great lier and lazy. When cobra entered the compound Dasa was sleeping in a shade. The members of the house shook him out and told him about the arrival of a cobra. He replied in sleepy posture that 'there is no cobra'. It shows his idleness in the matter. It also shows his negligence and uncourteous behaviour. The author points out that when the inmates and neighbours cut the grass and creeper with sharp knives and other means he got a chance to defend him and again said, 'Where is the snake ?' After some time he came with a sealed water-pot and said, 'I have caught him in this.' He tried to take the credit of catching the snake. The mother of the family also told him that he was brave and sincere. He said again 'Don't call me an idler hereafter.' But the fact was that there was no snake in the water-pot. All these utterances prove him a lier, incourteous and idle.

Q. 4. Does the story throw any light on how people faced with sudden danger behave ?

Ans. It is quite natural to be frightened if any sudden danger falls unexpectedly. This was the situation with the people who were present there. They become panicky. In the situation of turmoil, they began to charge over the servant Dasa. They even made allegations on one another for their being responsible in inviting danger. The mother became frightened and began to cry. Dasa was not showing any reaction. Inmates with the help of the neighbours cut grass and creepers with sharp knives and other weapons. They were jointly making efforts to clean the compound where the cobra was hidden. An old beggar woman appeared at the gate of the bunglow who asked for alms. At this the inmates told her to go away as they were busy in searching the cobra. She advised them not to kill the cobra, as it was God Subramanya. The mother was convinced with the beggar woman's advice. The beggar promised to send a snake-charmer A snake-charmer came to the site but he showed his inability because the cobra had disappeared. He told them to inform him when the cobra appeared. Finally the cobra was seen coming ou of the hole of compound wall.

Thus the behaviour of the people has been presented im action facing with sudden danger.

Q. 5. Narrate in brief the people's attempt to catch the cobra.

Ans. Hearing the news of the cobra, neighbours gathered at the gate of the bunglow. They began to think of a way to catch the cobra. The members of the family were worried. They shook the body of the servant Dasa, who was sleeping in a shed. Feeling disturbed, he was annoyed and told them that there was no cobra in the compound. The mother of the family chid him and told him to catch the cobra before the evening. Everybody began to chide him for his laziness. The neighbours also charged him for keeping the compound unclean. He defended himself by saying that he had been asking to buy a grass-cutter for a long time. The inmates and neighbours began to talk about the grass-cutter. They were of the opinion that the price of grass-cutter was very high due to war at that time. The inmates with the help of the neighbours cleaned the grass and bushes with sharp knives and other weapons. The youngest son was a college-boy who presented a data of casuality due to snake-bite. The landlady cried out of fear. Meanwhile Dasa appeared there with a sealed water-pot. He put the pot down and told them that he had caught the cobra in the water-pot. He narrated the strategy he had employed to catch it. The landlady thanked him for his brave work. He told her that he was going to hand over the cobra to a snake-charmer who was living nearby. Then the landlady poured some milk in the pot. Dasa walked off with the water-pot. Five minutes after the departure of Dasa the youngest son saw a cobra coming out of a hole in the compound. The cobra moved under the gate and disappeared along a drain.
Thus the story throws light on the truth how the people made attempts to catch cobra.

Q. 6. Narrate in brief what the snake-charmer tells about catching a snake.

Ans. Having heard the news of cobra, people gathered in the  compound of the bunglow. They were very much frightened and bri talked about how the cobra would come out. Suddenly a snake charmer appeared. All the people gathered around him. They  began to request him to catch the cobra. He narrated many stories  of his bravery. The people gathered there pointed towards the direction in which cobra had gone. But the snake-charmer showed his inability to catch the snake because the snake had already disappeared. He advised them to inform him when the cobra appeared. Then only could it be possible to catch the snake.
