Subhas Chandra Bose

( 23 January 1897 – 18 August 1945) was an Indian nationalist whose defiance of British authority in India made him a hero among many Indians, but his wartime alliances with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan left a legacy vexed by authoritarianism, anti-Semitism, and military failure.

The honorific Netaji (Hindi: "Respected Leader") was first applied to Bose in Germany in early 1942—by the Indian soldiers of the Indische Legion and by the German and Indian officials in the Special Bureau for India in Berlin. It is now used throughout India.

C... LONG ANSWER QUESTIONS :

Q. 1. In the letter it appears that Subhash is arguing with his mother. He repeatedly asks her questions. What are these questions? Why does he repeatedly ask questions ?

Ans. In the letter Subhash is arguing with his mother i.e., "Mother India" in true sense. He is advancing reasons. He is asking, as to why her sons are facing many kinds of troubles and miseries. People are under foreign rule. They are just like slaves. They are suffering from selfishness, jealousy, lack of patriotism, and hunger. They are ill-fed and ill-clad. He is discussing with the mother. He wonders why she doesn't care for her children. Being the mother of all Indians, why she does not response to their misery. He thinks that a mother can never be cruel. He repeats by asking her questions:

(i) Why don't the sorrows of her sons make her cry out in agony? Can a mother be heartless ?

(ii) Why doesn't her heart bleed at the sight of the present deplorable condition of the Indians, i.e. her children.

(iii) As he does not move with the pitiable condition, though a mother lives for her children, he wonders if the mother is also selfish ?"

(iv) He feels that prejudice and narrow-mindedness has e become unrestrained. Why doesn't she get aggrieved and deeply moved to tears?

He requests her to look at the pitiable condition of her children, suffering from hunger, jealousy, lack of love, selfishness which have made their existence a real hell.

In appears, his hope for the freedom of his motherland and attempt to regain past glory has shattered. So, being aggrieved and disheartened, he asks how far the condition of the country will become bad to worse. No body has come forward to serve Mother India selflessly and dedicate his whole life for the cause of Mother. Subhash is desperate to see the people taking sleep. becoming deaf and busy in unimportant and undesirable activities. None cares for the freedom of Mother India.

But eventually he is hopeful of such selfless people to come forward. He himself is ready for all possible co-operation and sacrifice needed to.

Q. 2. Write a short note on the piousness and sacredness of the river Ganga.

Ans. The Ganga is a holy and sacred river. It has great significance in our life. It carries away all the filth (sin) of this world. It is believed that it washes away sins and evils through its water. The yogis have gathered on its bank. Some are engaged in their morning prayer with half-closed eyes. Some have built images and are worshipping them with sweet-smelling flowers collected from the forest and with burning sandalwood and incense. Mantras chanted by some of them are being echoed and e-echoed through the atmosphere. Some persons take a holy dip for purifying themselves with the sacred water of the Ganga. Everything is so noble and so pleasing to the eyes as well as to the mind.

There are many famous temples on the bank of the river Ganga. The Hindus from all over the world come to take holy bath and 'darshan' on the bank of the Ganga. They (Hindus) call the river, 'Ganga Mata'.

Q. 3. Change this letter into a diary entry.

Ans. Puja celebration has entered its final day. There is pomp and show in the celebration with well-decorated venues of the pooja pandals. I am aggrieved to see the pathetic condition of our Mother India. India had a glorious past. She is God's beloved land and He (God) has been born in this great land in every age in the form of saviour for the enlightment of the people. He has blessed this earth to get rid of their sin and to establish righteousness and truth in every Indian heart.

There are sacred and holy rivers like the Ganga and the Godavari. People from different places come for the holy darshan and dip in their water. The yogis have gathered on their banks.

They perform worship with the fragrance of flowers collected

from the forest, sandalwood and incense.

I'm pained to witness the distressed condition of Mother India. I wonder why has such a situation been created, why is there no sincere and selfless son to serve his mother. I do not find a single person who is ready to sacrifice his desire and selfish interest. Everybody suffers from jealousy, selfishness, hunger and lack of love.

I am prepared to serve Mother India with the best of my abilities and sacrifice and expect the same from the people of the country. By doing this they will be able to serve their Mother India to achieve freedom of their country.

Q. 4. The letter creates a picture of Subhash's personality-his love for his mother as well as for his motherland. Discuss Subhash as a son.

Ans. Subhash was the worthy son of 'Mother India'. He had sacrified his life for the cause of his motherland. He will be remembered for his sacrifices and brave acts. He took his last breath for the freedom of the country and died in a crash on August 18, 1945. His letter addressed to mother throws the light on his anxiety and eagerness for the liberation of the country. It shows his determination in this direction.

He was pained to see the condition prevailing in India of pre Independence days. People were indulged in jealousy, communal hatred, selfishness and lack of love. They were suffering from hunger. They were not ready to sacrifice their desire and selfishness for the cause of Mother India. Subhash was surprised to see the people living in such a miserable and hopeless condition. He had an earnest desire to fight militantly and with great courage to get rid of British rule. He offered all sorts of co- operation and participation in the struggle for freedom.

He had a great love for his mother and Motherland as well.
